Teorema di unicità dei limiti

Buongiorno,
del teorema di unicità dei limiti mi sfugge l'importanza.

Mi spiego meglio.
Una volta che ho verificato con la Def. che lim(x-->2) x^2-1 = 3
a cosa mi serve il teorema di unicità?
