The theater at Jones Beach was evacuated for nearly two hours Saturday night
during the R.E.M., Modest Mouse and The National concert. At one point,
lightning struck the amphitheater, causing sparks to fly from the building,
witnesses and a spokesman for the parks agency said.

Modest Mouse stopped playing and concertgoers were told to evacuate around
8:35 p.m., said George Gorman, a spokesman for the state parks agency. About
three inches of standing water flooded the area, witnesses said.

R.E.M. resumed playing at about 10:10, Gorman said. Because of the delay,
the concert was expected to run late -- to about 11:45 p.m., Gorman said.
